Joy and I visited the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati where my brother Hal works as docent. We joined a school group that Hal led through one section of the Center.
He likes to begin his tours outside, overlooking the Ohio River — an important geographical marker toward freedom.
The Center features a wide variety of contents: large wall hangings, reconstructed buildings, videos, symbolic pillars, biographical sketches, important music and sculptures.
As docent, Hal is a story teller, school teacher and frequently, intense personal advocate.
A recitation of our country’s history can lead first to embarrassment but soon to deep grief for what happened both to the exploited and the exploiters.
At the same time one can not help but revere the strength of the human spirit.
A Tom Feelings and Tyrone Geter mural shows many versions of slavery and freedom.
Hal in retirement has found a meaningful way to use his experience and talents.
When in Cincinnati, be sure to visit the Center.
We visited this museum soon after it opened, and were very impressed.
